Most of New England is no more than a day's drive from the major transportation and cultural hub of Boston, so getting around doesn't have to be a show stopper (well, except for the traffic on I-95 on a holiday weekend). This guide is broken down into sections by state, although Boston of course gets its own chapter. The narrative includes an introduction to the region, traveler's needs, and a survival guide.It is worth remembering that the major attractions in New England can get really crowded in season. Plan ahead, or better yet, go off the beaten path. The pleasant town of Coventry, Connecticut, offers the home of American Revolutionary War spy and patriot Nathan Hale, and a big lake. Deer Isle, Maine, has a spectacular bridge and a real lobstering town on Deer Isle Thorofare. The interiors of all five states have much to offer, even as most visitors flock to the major towns. This guidebook is perfect for the fall trip I am planning with my friends. It includes a larger region of New England, with maps, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It also includes a section devoted to Boston. The DK guides have great quality: nice pages with colorful photos and diagrams. In general, they are easy to use and durable. They are a good size for carry-along and provide interesting details as you go.

I actually bought this on accident. But, since I have always wanted to go to New England in the Fall, I will keep it so that I can plan my trip. The book arrived in great condition. The box it was shipped in was rather large for the purchase; however, that guaranteed it arrived in great condition. I look forward to a New England trip with the guiding of DK.

While waiting for the four faiths tour to start at the Touro Synagog Leob Visitors Center, I saw a German couple reading and sharing the book, I thought that it was one of the best laid out and most informative visually that I was aware of. Promptly ordered the English language version and have been happily planning day trips using the book. I retired the first of August 2016 back to New England so that I could finally pay tourist and visit all those sites that I went to as a child or as a class trip and did not necessarily appreciate. As an adult, having both read and listened to MOBY DICK, I very much want to spend a day doing the museum and national park. Be warned and take a decent magnifying glass with you. Excellent and handy and getting to be well thumbed.

I only purchase DK Eyewitness Travel Books for any of my travels. This book encapsulates the most important information for key features of every city. The color photos and page layout make doing trip research enjoyable. Restaurant and accommodation info are up to date and factual. Books are small and easy to take with you for reference.

Lots of good information. The cliff notes version is they located places around the world where people live the longest. They called these the blue zones. Then they went to these places and studied the people, their diets, their habits and interviewed people about why they thought people lived longer in their region. They came up with 9 things to longer life. 1. move naturally 2. have a purpose in life 3. downshift -meditate-relax 4. 80% rule - eat 80% of your food, leave 20% on your plate 5. plant slant - more veggies, less meat 6. wine at 5 - one glass a day 7. right tribe - have long time friends who have healthy habits 8. community - be involved in your community in someway 9. family first - keep them close and enjoy the relationships. I have a neighbor who is 91 and he lives alone, drives himself, does his own yard work and he takes zero medications. He amazes me. I was talking to him about things the book said and he offered his advice; He smoked until he was 40 but he quit and said everybody should quit, he quit sugar in 1993, he eats beans, usually navy beans everyday. He eats a lot of broccoli and whole grain bread. He is outside doing something in his yard everyday when its not raining. He goes to bed at around 7pm and gets up at 4-5 am. He has friends that he goes out with each week and he goes to church every week. He also has 1 can of beer a day. He says its for his kidneys. He has two big fluffy dogs and he takes good care of them. He's broke his hip, he's had lots of skin cancers removed and treated with radiation but never any continuing condition like high blood pressure or heart disease. So he agreed that the advice in the book is spot on as far as he's concerned. Very well done book with interesting and entertaining interviews and advice. It also has a lot of recipes for foods the people in the blue zones are eating. There is also advice for turning your home into a blue zone. I recommend this book.

As an 81-year old widower,"Blue Zones Solutions" confirmed my intuitive ​observations. Six years ago, my wife died. I was an exhausted couch potato barely able to leave home without help. Our USAF family had lived on three continents for over six years. I began a lifestyle of recovery and restoration of health. Today, my diet has become very similar to "Blue Zones Solutions" findings. My doctors are astonished when my complete blood, chemicals and other tests are all within the normal range. I take no medications, not even an 81 mg aspirin.

It seems the main thing the blue zone people have in common is they don't live in modern industrial society. They mostly live rural pastoral lifestyles. I would have liked to know a bit more about the lifestyle part although this book focuses mostly on diet. However I think there is only a limited amount of the lifestyle that us who do live the industrial life will EVER be able to imitate, despite the endless happy cheer-leading in the book that "you too can live in a blue zone". The diet similarities seemed much less than the lifestyle similarities. It does seem blue zones people mostly eat high carb, with the addition of a lot of food picked fresh of the trees and plants locally that day (it goes with their rural lifestyle, but again how many of us will imitate that?), and beans are a regular part of the diet.It is also true the recipes don't seem to follow the actual diets of the people as described in the book that much. I like ethnic cookbooks that try to be as authentic as possible with a few adaptations for things that aren't possible to find elsewhere, but these recipes do seem tailored to a preexisting diet philosophy, rather than what the people in the blue zones were actually eating at least as described in the book. A few of them still seem like they might be tasty though, but I really wanted more from this book than a few recipes.

This is a very good book for those looking to change their diet and incorporate healthy alternatives. Full of recipes and ideas. We're using it at least every week. Recommended.

Rabaka (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) offers a sweeping historical assessment of cultural ideologies connecting hip-hop to artistic innovations of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts movements. He mobilizes cultural theorists ― Baraka, Foucault, DuBois, Jameson, Said, Fanon, Hurston ― to describe the evolution of African American intellectual and cultural history via 'radical humanism, and democratic socialism.' Sprawling overviews of Africana critical theory, feminist theory, and queer theory imagine 'anti-racist, anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, and sexual orientation-sensitive critical theory of contemporary society.' The author provides interesting, if diffuse, discussion of gay literary voices in the Harlem Renaissance in relation to the contemporary homo-hop movement; Black Arts Movement members' perception of the aesthetic radicalism of the Harlem Renaissance'; and the 'black aesthetic' sensibility that ''authentic' black art was always historically grounded, politically engaged, socially uplifting, and consciousness-raising.' In exploring the relationships between the black women's liberation, feminist art, and hip-hop feminist movements, Rabaka mines work by Patricia Collins. Reiland Rabaka is an associate professor of Africana studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he is also an affiliate professor in the Women and Gender Studies Program and a Research Fellow at the Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America (CSERA). He is the author of several books, including: Du Bois's Dialectics (2008); Africana Critical Theory (2009); Forms of Fanonism (2010); and Against Epistemic Apartheid (2010). He is also the recipient of the Cheikh Anta Diop Distinguished Career Award.
